A New Hope

Chewbacca and Han Solo

Dan here. Most people who read this know how much I love movies. If I had a choice to do something with my free time, I would choose to watch a movie. I even watch movies on a portable DVD player on my lunch breaks. For more info on that, check out my blog here: http://www.moviesforlunch.blogspot.com/. I grew up watching movies with my dad and I really enjoyed it, probably much to my mother's dismay. I worked at a movie theater for 3 years and a video store for 2 more. I can remember dates of important events sometimes because of the movie that came out around the same time. Yikes, this makes it sound like I'm obsessed. Maybe just a little...

So this Father's Day I was thinking to myself: what's a fun way to illustrate the whole father/son dynamic with my own son. Then it occurred to me that I should watch the ultimate father/son movie of my generation: Star Wars! I have been telling Patrice for awhile that I wanted to watch Star Wars with Harrison at some point. And since Patrice doesn't have much interest in Star Wars, I took the opportunity to do just that. Here was my chance to a) watch one of my favorite movies, and b) introduce Harrison to the phenomenon I love that is Star Wars.

The best part for me was right before I started the movie. Harrison came and sat right next to me. Thinking about this small moment just makes me happy. He watched the whole thing from start to finish (although I covered his eyes when Obi-Wan cuts off that dude's arm in the Cantina). I think Harrison enjoyed how visual it was, and he said that he liked it when I asked him. I'm excited for future episodes as he gets older.

This was a great Father's Day memory for me: Watching my favorite movie with my son. Soon there will be another little boy in our house, and before I know it I'll have the chance to do it all over again with Son #2. Side note: While we haven't decided on any names for boy #2, my buddy suggested we name him Ford. And I'm not gonna lie, I kinda like it.

I hope this ritual isn't restricted to just fathers and sons...I used to watch Star Wars with my Dad all the time...but I used to wish I was Princess Laya (sp?)...maybe Jordan can enjoy the same experience with his girls...
