About three weeks ago, I started a new job as a Deputy Court Clerk for the Third District Court in Salt Lake. And I already love it. I have been working in banking for the past four years, and after about two years, I knew that was not what I wanted to do for the rest of my life. You either love it or hate it, and I did not love it. I only ended up working in it longer than I planned because it was what I knew.
I applied for a position at the court in August, and actually had an interview, but ultimately was not chosen. But a month after that, I got a call from the lady who I interviewed with and she offered me a position. I accepted the position on a Friday, and started the following Monday.
So what exactly does a deputy court clerk do? For starters, what I probably do the most is make copies. Lots of copies. Copies of divorce decrees, judgment decrees, and on more than one occasion, entire cases. But the more interesting part of what I do is take filings. If you want to take someone to small claims court, you file the paperwork with me. If you own property and are trying to evict your tenants, you file the paperwork with me. If you are going sue someone, you file the paperwork with me. And if you need to file for divorce (which you hopefully will never have to), you file the paperwork with me. On the flipside, if you are on the receiving end of any of the above-mentioned actions, you have to file your paperwork with me as well.
I know that it may sound boring because it's all paperwork, but the person I'm helping is usually not. They all have a story to tell, and they end up telling it to me even though I never asked them to. For instance, there was a lady who was all upset because her stalking injunction was denied. She was convinced that the guy she filed against was going to escape from prison, and that the first thing he would do was find her and kill her. I recognized the name of the dude she filed against, and he is definitely not getting out of prison anytime soon. From what I saw of the judgment decree, the judge said that there was no evidence that she had ever had any contact with this guy. Just some crazy lady, who I later found out comes in all the time for other crazy stuff.
Anyways, that's what I do. This is a place where I can make a career, and on top of that, has outstanding benefits, including a pension. I have been trying to get a job in government, and I've finally found my way in.
